The Choir

I have composed music for the 15-speaker immersive sound system in Ideal Bar, and out of this emerged a series of compositions.

I approached the work without a predetermined direction, wanting to see what would arise as soon as I began to throw sound around the space. The ‘choir’ was particularly a phenomenon that continued to resonate through the music I was writing. Combined with the voice’s more extreme states and qualities, a series of works emerged, which I have chosen to gather under the name The Choir.

The Choir thus became an extensive exploration of the voice’s mystical and sculptural qualities as it materializes in a three-dimensional soundscape. It is an interplay between the meaningless and meaning-bearing states of the voice, investigating the potential that arises when the voice is regarded as something other and something more than human.
